This package takes you on an unforgettable safari in East Africa before bringing you face-to-face with Rwanda’s majestic mountain gorillas. You will start in Nairobi, Kenya, followed by The Maasai Mara and the Serengeti in Tanzania. These are two of the world’s most famous National Parks and are home to the Great Migration. These parks in Kenya and Tanzania are known for their open short grass plains with abundant wildlife. Overnight in Arusha before flying to Kigali in Rwanda. You will travel to Musanze where you will trek the Gorillas and Golden Monkeys in the Volcanoes National Park. This safari is often referred to as ‘the most memorable in the world’.
Destinations visited
Kigali, Rwanda
Kigali, Rwanda
Lying at the heart of Africa, Rwanda is one of the most dynamic travel destinations. Experience vibrant cities, pristine wilderness and an exceptionally hospitable people during your holiday in Rwanda. A unique and largely undiscovered venue, Rwanda also offers unrivalled biodiversity, beautiful mountains, some of the oldest and most precious rain forests on earth, five volcanoes, 23 lakes, numerous waterfalls, and three stunning national parks. As to wildlife, Rwanda boasts 13 species of primates (25% of the total number in Africa), and 670 species of birds, many of which are globally endangered. Kigali is the capital and largest city of Rwanda. It is situated near the geographic centre of the nation. The city has been the economic, cultural, and transport hub of Rwanda since it became capital at independence in 1962.
Musanze
Musanze
For most travellers, Musanze (Ruhengeri) is the preferred staging post on their way to the magnificent Volcanoes National Park, one of the best places in East Africa to track the mountain gorilla. Since permit holders are required to check in at the park headquarters in nearby Kinigi at 7am on the day of tracking, staying in Musanze is a much safer option than leaving from Kigali at the crack of dawn. Musanze is a pleasant enough town to explore on foot, and it’s situated near a number of interesting natural sights, with the massive Virunga volcanoes looming to the north and west.
Gorilla Trekking
Gorilla Trekking
Expert local guides will bring you face to face with silverback gorillas in the Parc National des Volcans. You will spend between 3-10 hours tracking one of the official gorilla family groups through hillside paths, sometimes crawling through dense vegetation which can at times be challenging. Only limited visitor permits are available daily in order to conserve the habitat that the mountains live in, which makes early booking essential to avoid disappointment. Under guidance from the best, most highly trained people for the job, you find yourself face-to-face with something that seems so unequivocally human, it takes your breath away. An early start and a trek through dense rainforest is totally worth it for the privilege of spending an hour with these fascinating mammals. Youngsters may show off and huge silverbacks may beat their chests, but nothing beats just witnessing a gorilla family as they go about their daily business, chomp on bamboo, and watch you in return. It is no wonder that a gorilla trekking safari is often referred to as ‘the most memorable in the world’.
Nairobi
Nairobi
Nairobi is Kenya’s bustling capital city, often used as a jumping-off point for safari trips. East Africa's most cosmopolitan city, Nairobi is Kenya's beating heart, an exciting, maddening concrete jungle that jarringly counterpoints the untrammeled natural beauty to be found elsewhere in the country. Nairobi's polarizing character ensures that the city is reviled and loved in equal measure, and even those who love it might well admit that it's the kind of place many rave about only once they're away from it. For those who call it home, the city's charms include a vibrant cultural life, fabulous places to eat and exciting nightlife. With a fabulous national park on its doorstep, some wildlife-centric attractions, the excellent National Museum and a series of quirky sights, Nairobi's reality – like that of so many places with a bad reputation – will often come as a pleasant surprise.
Maasai Mara
Maasai Mara
The Maasai Mara National Reserve is an area of preserved savannah wilderness in southwestern Kenya, along the Tanzanian border. Its animals include lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras and hippos. Wildebeest traverse its plains during their annual migration. The landscape has grassy plains and rolling hills, and is crossed by the Mara and Talek rivers. The area nearby is dotted with villages (enkangs) of Maasai people.
Serengeti
Serengeti
The Serengeti ecosystem is a geographical region in Africa. It is located mainly in northern Tanzania and extends into south-western Kenya between 1 and 3 degrees south and between 34 and 36 degrees east. It spans approximately 30,000 km².
Arusha/Kilimanjaro
Arusha/Kilimanjaro
Arusha is a city in East Africa's Tanzania, located at the base of volcanic Mt. Meru. It's a gateway to safari destinations and to Africa's highest peak, 5,895m Mt. Kilimanjaro, lying some 100 kilometers northeast. Arusha is Tanzania's gateway to the northern circuit of stellar national parks and the starting point of many a memorable safari. It's also a large, sprawling city with all the contradictions that brings. To the west lies Serengeti National Park, home to wildlife including lions, rhinoceros, giraffes and leopards. Annual migrations feature huge herds of wildebeests crossing its plains.
