Milan

As the epicenter of Italian fashion and design, it is a shopper’s paradise, but that is only one of Milan’s many exceptional characteristics. Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper and other great works of art can be found here, as well as a spectacular Gothic Duomo, the finest of its kind. Furthermore, Milan’s world-famous Opera provides splendid elegant nights spent in exclusive company.

Milan is financially the most important city in Italy. It has the second most populous city proper in the country, but sits at the centre of Italy's largest urban and metropolitan area. While incorrectly not considered as beautiful as some Italian cities, having been partly destroyed by Second World War bomb raids, the city has rebuilt itself into a thriving cosmopolitan business capital. In essence, for a tourist, what makes Milan interesting compared to other places is that the city is truly more about the lifestyle of enjoying worldly pleasures: a paradise for shopping, football, opera, and nightlife. Milan remains the marketplace for Italian fashion – fashion aficionados, supermodels and international paparazzi descend upon the city twice a year for its spring and autumn fairs. Don't get fooled by the modern aspect of the city, since it's one of the most ancient cities in Europe with more than 26 centuries of history and heritage!

Milan is Italy’s city of the future, a fast-paced metropolis where creativity is big business, looking good is compulsory and after-work drinks are an art form.

Weather
Spring
Spring
Spring is a major time in Milan’s calendar, with fashion events, exhibitions and fairs aplenty. The city warms up rapidly after its winter freeze, with daytime highs already reaching 13 degrees in March and 20 degrees by May. Early spring nights can still be rather cold, however, with temperatures falling to around 3 degrees in March. Rainfall in Milan is spread throughout the year, and spring is no exception, so you’ll see plenty of rainy days as well as days of bright sunshine. Given the fluctuating temperatures and possibility of heavy showers, layered clothing is a good bet for a spring visit to Milan.
Summer
Summer

There’s no let up in Milan’s hectic calendar of events during the summer months, although may locals choose to leave the city at the height of summer to escape the muggy heat.

Daytime highs in the summer can easily reach 30 degrees, and with frequent thunderstorms and short, heavy bursts of rain, the humidity is high too. This can make for uncomfortable conditions, with a sticky feel to the air and lots of biting insects. If you’re visiting Milan in the summer, take lightweight cotton clothing, insect repellent and sunscreen, as well as sunglasses and perhaps a hat.

Autumn
Autumn
September and October are popular months to visit Milan, as the crowds of summer will have dispersed and the temperatures are more comfortable. You can expect daytime highs of around 25 degrees in September, falling to a cool 10 degrees in November. It can be wet, and fog is common throughout the autumn months but this usually parts to let in the autumn sunshine and dazzling colors.

Autumn is a good time to explore Milan’s dozens of museums and art galleries, especially if it’s raining outside.

Winter
Winter
December, January and February are slightly drier than most of the rest of the year, but the city is often overcast, foggy and bitingly cold. Daytime highs of 5 degrees fall to -2 overnight, and snow falls occasionally. The levels of pollution can also be quite high, which is worth bearing in mind.

If you do visit Milan in the winter, bring warm clothing, gloves and a hat!
